XJ13 History


Text Box:  The XJ13, circa 1966, was Jaguar’s first V-12 platform and answer to the challenge to remain competitive in the LeMans racing circuit. Although it never raced, it did break track records at MIRA in 1967 during its initial test run with Norman Dewis in the cockpit. A rear wheel collapse during a later promotional run resulted in a crash that severely damaged the XJ13. Norman Dewis walked away from the crash, and the XJ13 was placed in a warehouse in its wrecked state.  Jaguar had planned on continuing the development of the XJ13 for racing, but the XJ13 was relegated to the back burner after Jaguar merged with BMC.  It was eventually restored, being completed in 1973 with a few modifications. The famous Jaguar XJ13 and now resides in the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Museum, attracting attention and visitors from all over the world.


Only one XJ13 was ever built, and the thought of putting the XJ13 body design into mass production was decided against for fear of cannibalizing Jaguar’s sales of the then successful E-type. This is a testament to the strong aesthetic appeal of the XJ13 body design by Malcom Sayer, who also designed the successful Jaguar C & D types.  Even Jaguar’s upper management of the day recognized the potential commercial success of the design. 


The original XJ13 has never been available for private ownership.  However, it is now possible to build your own replica XJ13 using the SCF XJ13 body chassis unit as your high quality platform.
